Weird, wonderful and whacky
stops on a road trip from Wellington to Bay of Islands?
My two wahine characters (Moe and Girl) are going on a road trip from Wellington to Bay of Islands. One character is disconnected to her culture, although carries her tupuna name. The other character is connected to her culture and generally likes to do things the right way. Its gonna be a Māori version of Thelma and Louise and Eat, Pray and Love.
There’s going to be a few stops along the way. I was wondering if anyone could help me out with weird, wonderful, whacky places to stop along the way? Descriptions of and what made it weird, wonderful or whacky?
I’ve always been the stop in the main centres and never really detour off State Highway 1. You know, Taihape, Taupo through to Hamilton, Auckland and then straight through. Although I did hitchhike with my brother once from Auckland to Whangarei when I was 12. My Dad hitchhiked behind us. He thought the motorists were more likely to pick up two teenagers and 1 old fulla separately. Maybe I’ll get my two characters trying that too.
I know about a spot along the desert road windy bit where it’s the place to stop for a joint. I’d quite like to get that into the story, but then that would mean going along State Highway 1. And not that there is anything wrong going the main way…it could still be weird, wonderful and whacky.
Any ideas would be so muchly appreciated.
And if you are interested in reading this novel in progress, of what happened to get these two characters on a road trip heading up North and finding out their why…then think about becoming a paid subscriber on my Substack!!! All funds going towards getting my short film in to production. Of which is still on my list brother Vaughan Slinn and Tara O’Brien for you to help me with
